How can you pivot your career?

To those who are at the stage (via MBA or otherwise) to pivot their careers and get into something fundamentally different

1 question for you could be how to prepare & go after a career choice that is totally new

…I loved reflecting on this yesterday with the MBA batch at IMD. Below is one way to approach

1.    Know your skills – segment them into fungible & non-fungible; understand how fungible skills can be applied to the new role you aspire
2.    Define your WHY and demonstrate readiness to add value since Day 1; three tips to practice before you enter the interview room (almost every role requires these)
a.    How do you approach solving a problem?
b.    If it involves team management, and cross-functional navigation – bring alive people skills around influencing, team cohesion, creating a compelling vision/purpose
c.     Demonstrate learning agility – rapid ramp up on new industry / culture / function
3.    Build an understanding of adjacent roles which could work as a step to open doors toward your dream role

I understand the stress b-school students go through while navigating such decisions; it is once in a lifetime kind of phase. I myself went through this a few years ago…

As Gary Travis says ‘you don’t need to have a perfect start in your career to reach your destination

…its a journey of seeking & finding meaning in what you do

Thanks a lot, Chayan Sabharwal, CFA, FRM for inviting us to the campus, it refreshed our memories of b-school days; I left enthused with the inquisitiveness, clarity, and drive of the batch.
